CENTRIA Sees Sustainable Results from Recycle, Reuse, Reclaim Initiatives

"Innovations in sustainability don't end at the design and manufacturing stages"

Moon Township, Pa, September 2011 — CENTRIA’s formal and verifiable Recycle, Reuse and Reclaim initiatives have generated impressive results and demonstrate the company’s unparalleled commitment to sustainable practices in the built environment.

“CENTRIA’s commitment to sustainability in the commercial building industry doesn’t end at the design and manufacturing stages of product development,” said Carla Liebenguth, Sustainability Associate, CENTRIA. “We’re continually looking at ways to extend the life of our products. Our Recycle, Reuse and Reclaim initiatives, along with partner organizations, help us make a real and substantial positive environmental impact.”

CENTRIA’s Sheridan, Ark., plant works in collaboration with Metro Scrap Metals, Inc., to recycle any scrap metal generated during the manufacturing process.  In 2010, CENTRIA facilitated the recycling of more than 1.1 million pounds of scrap metal.

In addition to recycling scrap metal, CENTRIA partners with Sizemore Metal Products to repurpose products that were originally used for test runs or do not meet CENTRIA’s high standards for sale. For example, some of the products designated for reuse are used for agricultural buildings, church camps, or camping trailers.  Future opportunities for reuse, based on the location and current use of metal panels, are in the planning stages.

CENTRIA’s well-established recycling and reuse procedures allowed the company to implement a Reclaim Program, one of the first of its kind in the commercial building industry.  This initiative gives building owners the option of sending used CENTRIA panels from deconstructed or renovated buildings at the end of the current exterior wall life to the Sheridan plant. Once there, the panels will be assessed for either reuse or recycling.

These innovative programs help to move CENTRIA towards a more sustainable system, maximizing benefits for the built environment while minimizing any potential negative impact on the natural environment.

  • Two CENTRIA Locations Receive 2011 Pennsylvania Waste Watcher Awards for Sustainability Initiatives

Professional Recyclers of Pennsylvania (PROP) Program Recognizes Organizations for Exemplary Performance in Recycling, Waste Reduction, Reuse and Composting

Moon Township, Pa., September 13, 2011— CENTRIA, an industry leader in the design, development and manufacture of sustainable architectural metal wall and roof systems, has been recognized with two separate 2011 Pennsylvania Waste Watcher awards for their significant sustainability efforts—one for their corporate office in Moon Township and one for their Ambridge coil coating facility. An initiative of the Professional Recyclers of Pennsylvania (PROP), the Pennsylvania Waste Watchers award recognizes corporate and community programs that go above and beyond state mandates for recycling and waste reduction.

“CENTRIA’s commitment to environmental responsibility permeates every aspect of our company,” said Rick Mowrey, Director of Marketing and Business Development, CENTRIA. “Often acknowledgments regarding our sustainability practices are focused on our environmentally friendly products and manufacturing processes, so we are very pleased to be recognized for the strides we take within our facilities every day to preserve the environment.”

Simple, easy-to-implement changes have made a significant impact. At the corporate headquarters, CENTRIA employees recycled 10.94 standard tons of office paper in 2010.  The building is now equipped with EcoRewards recycling bins, allowing employees to recycle plastic and cardboard in addition to paper, glass and metal. While employees are encouraged to use their own glasses and mugs, any Styrofoam cups that are used are returned to the vendor for recycling.

“In addition to the conventional strides we’ve taken to decrease waste in our day-to-day operations, we’ve also created several unique recycling projects that we publicize internally,” said Carla Liebenguth, Sustainability Associate at CENTRIA.

For example, CENTRIA’s Moon Township office donates one large container full of aluminum cans to their local fire department each month, the proceeds from which benefit the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Free Care Fund. The company also collects used cell phones/accessories for the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium to recycle, as well as used ink cartridges, which help fund a company-wide effort to send care packages to our troops.

At CENTRIA’s Ambridge facility, all waste associated with coil coating is evaluated and separated for recycling or reuse. In 2010 alone, the facility recycled 3,635 tons of material ranging from steel and aluminum to office paper and ink cartridges.  Recycling bins, in highly visible locations, have replaced trash cans throughout the facility for easy identification and simple sorting.

The Ambridge facility also implemented processes focused on reducing the consumption of water, energy and harmful chemicals during the manufacturing process. Water usage was reduced by 57,600 gallons last year after installing special misting nozzles, and more than 95 percent of the water that is actually used is recycled. The coil coating services facility has also implemented air nozzle technology to remove a large blower, reducing their electric usage by 194,249 kilowatts, resulting in an average savings of $16,511 in energy costs.

In addition, the Ambridge facility has formed significant partnerships with their vendors and distributors to ensure that the minimal packaging and shipping materials that are used can be easily recycled by the end user.

Finally, Ambridge employees are held accountable for personal sustainability actions. Monthly meetings are held to update all personnel on new opportunities, including depositing recyclable materials from home in the plant’s bins. Several community businesses drop off corrugated cardboard at the facility’s easily accessible recycling dock.

“Our ultimate goal is to produce less waste,” said Carla Liebenguth. “This Waste Watchers recognition serves to demonstrate the importance of our internal efforts at multiple locations and we hope that it will educate and encourage even more employees to participate in our initiatives for years to come.”

  • Life Cycle Assessment Validates Sustainability Attributes of CENTRIA's Formawall® Dimension Series®

3” Formawall Dimension Series has comparable or lower total environmental impact than Aluminum Composite Material and precast concrete

Moon Township, Pa., May 10, 2011 — CENTRIA released a summary report that demonstrates the superior sustainability of its 3” Formawall Dimension Series (FWDS) insulated metal wall panel system as compared to Aluminum Composite Material (ACM) and precast concrete. The report is based on a comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment study conducted by Five Winds International in collaboration with PE Americas. For a copy of the summary report, visit www.CENTRIA.com/ReimagineMetal and visit the Education Center’s White Papers section.

“As a socially responsible corporate citizen, CENTRIA takes environmental responsibility seriously,” said Carla Liebenguth, Sustainability Associate at CENTRIA. “As such, we’re continually looking at ways to improve our products not just in terms of their aesthetic appeal or performance, but also to ensure that they have the maximum amount of positive impact on the built environment with the least amount of negative impact on the natural environment. Formawall Dimension Series was the first exterior building product to receive Cradle-to-Cradle® certification, and now this Life Cycle Assessment complements that certification by helping us determine what we can do to further improve the sustainable attributes of our products and processes.”

The life cycle stages included in the study address raw material extraction, production and transportation of all materials involved in the manufacturing process, manufacturing of wall components, packaging, installation, maintenance and end-of-life treatment. The LCA excludes the building use phase impacts such as heating and cooling; however, all wall assemblies were designed to conform to the minimum prescriptive requirement in accordance with Proposed Addendum bb to ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2007 Zone 5. The final report underwent external, independent critical review and fully complies with the ISO 14040/14044 standards.

According to the Life Cycle Assessment, 3” FWDS has a better overall environmental profile in most areas than precast concrete or ACM. Precast concrete has a significantly larger potential for global warming, acidification and smog; and ACM has a significantly larger potential for global warming, non-renewable primary energy demand, acidification and smog potential.

“We understand the importance of sustainable products for architects, building owners, developers and others in today’s building and construction marketplace,” said Rick Brow, CENTRIA’s Director of Marketing. “The Life Cycle Assessment study has not only helped confirm that many of the sustainable qualities of our product outweigh those of ACM and precast concrete, but it has also helped us improve our product’s sustainability. We were able to identify and replace a chemical cleaner used during the manufacturing process to a more environmentally-friendly option and we have implemented a Reuse, Recycle, Take-Back program to help ensure prolonged product life in a variety of forms to avoid waste.”

The Formawall Dimension Series wall system provides advanced thermal efficiency and moisture control in a single panelized component. Compared to the traditional multi-component wall construction, which typically requires up to five separate components and multiple installers for each of the components, Formawall Dimension Series only requires one installer, helping to simplifying and ensure proper installation and long-term performance

As building envelope materials, CENTRIA’s metal wall and roof systems provide the broadest spectrum of aesthetic options, the most advanced thermal and moisture protection and the highest degree of sustainability available today. From inspiration to installation, CENTRIA’s metal building envelope systems free designers’ creativity and improve constructability for contractors.

  • CENTRIA Products Contribute to Merck & Co., Inc.'s International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering's Facility of the Year Award

Building uses Formawall® Dimension Series®, Formavue™ Integrated Window Systems for its Global Clinical Supplies Manufacturing, Packaging and Warehouse Expansion

Moon Township, Pa., September 2011—CENTRIA’s high performance, aesthetically-pleasing, sustainable products were used extensively for Merck Inc.’s Global Clinical Supplies Manufacturing, Packaging and Warehouse Expansion project, which recently won the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering’s (ISPE) 2011 Facility of the Year Award.  A clean, sleek look was created across three buildings by using Formawall® Dimension Series® wall panels and Formavue™ Integrated Window Systems, C/S Sunshades and C/S Louvers.

“CENTRIA’s products played a key role in helping us successfully execute our hybrid design approach,” said Eric Bohn, Principal, Jacobs/Wyper Architects, LLP, the design firm responsible for the project. “This project included three radically different buildings—an existing decommissioned warehouse that was renovated for improved clinical manufacturing and development, a new three-floor operations support facility, and a modular pilot plant for primary manufacturing operations. We needed lightweight products that could be easily installed on varied substrates and that would aesthetically unify these buildings.”

Merck Inc.’s goal for this facility, and what the design needed to accommodate, was the expansion, enhancement and integration of their core drug product development, manufacturing processes and packaging capabilities.

Working on three buildings simultaneously required careful coordination by the project team to construct new buildings that would meet Merck’s strategic need to increase productivity and efficiency, as well as renovating and adapting an existing structure.

“It was important for us to choose versatile exterior building products that would maintain continuity between the buildings,” said Bohn. “While the new office building required application to a conventional steel structure, the 30-40 year-old-warehouse included a wide range of masonry due to expansion and repairs over the years. The project also included modular building construction for the primary manufacturing operations and a support facility. We were able to install CENTRIA’s lightweight, flexible products on these diverse structures without any structural impediments.”

Known for aesthetics, performance and sustainability, CENTRIA is an industry leader in the design, development and manufacture of architectural metal wall and roof systems. This particular project used CENTRIA’s Formawall® Dimension Series®, which provides both advanced thermal efficiency and moisture control in a single panelized component. Compared to traditional multi-component wall construction – typically requiring up to seven separate components such as a rainscreen, an air barrier, exterior gypsum sheathing, fiberglass insulation and a vapor barrier – Formawall Dimension Series only requires one component, making it one of today’s preferred wall systems. CENTRIA Formavue™ Integrated Window Systems, C/S Sunshades and C/S Louvers (joint creations of CENTRIA and Construction Specialties, Inc.) integrated seamlessly with the Formawall panels, and are attractive, weather-resistant and feature a standard thermal break that provides enhanced efficiency.

The ISPE Facility of the Year Award recognizes state-of-the-art pharmaceutical manufacturing projects that utilize innovative technologies to enhance the delivery quality of a project and reduce the cost of producing high-quality medicines. Now in its seventh year, ISPE has received award submissions from more than 25 different countries and territories, marking its competitive international nature.

  • CENTRIA's Kentucky Plant is a Repeat Safety Standout

Receives top safety honor for second time in four years

Moon Township, Pa., July 2011—CENTRIA, an industry leader in the design, development and manufacture of architectural metal wall and roof systems, is pleased to announce that its Frankfort, Ky., plant recently received the 2010 Governor’s Safety and Health Award. The Award was presented June 8 by Kentucky Secretary of Labor, Mark Brown, and is presented to Kentucky businesses whose employees work a certain number of hours without any occupation-related injuries or illnesses.

CENTRIA’s employees needed 250,000 hours to qualify for the award. The Frankfort facility far exceeded this amount with no lost-time accidents over the course of 515,527 hours – the amount of hours worked since the company’s first Safety and Health Award in 2006. With two awards in four years, CENTRIA’s stringent safety procedures are working and keeping employees safe as they produce a high quality product for the building construction industry.

“We have three goals: safety, production and quality. Safety comes first,” said CENTRIA plant manager, Gary Brunette. “We want them to go home the same way they come in every day.”

All CENTRIA manufacturing team members wear safety glasses with side shields, gloves and steel-toed boots to maximize safety in the workplace. This is in keeping with the company’s annual Plan for Occupational Health and Safety.  In addition, the plan requires that health and safety policies and procedures be reviewed during monthly leadership visits to all CENTRIA facilities, discussed at all quarterly CENTRIA Town Hall meetings and be actively promoted throughout the organization.  The goal of all of these initiatives is to minimize the impact to employees and business processes from occupational illnesses and injuries. There is a spirit of collaboration as team members and leaders search out and implement the latest advances in industrial safety.  Progress is regularly monitored and adjustments are initiated as a way of ensuring optimal safety.

This latest award demonstrates the success of this multi-faceted approach, which supplements site-specific safety initiatives at all CENTRIA manufacturing centers, which in addition to Frankfort, are located in Ambridge, Pa., Sheridan, Ark., and Cambridge, Oh.

“I cannot think of a better testament to CENTRIA’s commitment to safety than to be recognized two times by the state of Kentucky in this way,” said Ray Caudill, Vice President, Operations, CENTRIA. “We are incredibly proud of our Frankfort manufacturing facility for this honorable and important achievement.”

  • CENTRIA Products Help 930 Poydras Win 2011 National AIA Housing Award

Eskew+Dumez+Ripple Design for Mixed-Use Building Recognized for Sustainability, Affordability, Innovation and Design Excellence

Moon Township, Pa., [May 3, 2011]— 930 Poydras Residential Tower, a mixed-use building in the heart of New Orleans’ Central Business District, was recognized with a 2011 National AIA Housing Award.  Designed by the New Orleans architectural firm Eskew+Dumez+Ripple, the building is an urban high-rise residential apartment complex with ground-level retail spaces that provide additional amenities for the residents.  The building is a distinctive, modern addition to the more traditional streetscape of its Central Business District neighborhood.  CENTRIA’s Formawall® Dimension Series® and Formavue™ FV400 Windows helped bring this design vision to life, as well as helping the project achieve its performance and sustainability goals.

“In designing 930 Poydras, our goal was to create a one-of-a-kind living environment that facilitates interaction between the residents, and adds a new dimension to downtown living,” said Steve Dumez, design director at Eskew+Dumez+Ripple. “We were looking for products that were just as innovative as our design and CENTRIA products delivered.  Formawall Dimension Series impressed our team with its advanced thermal and moisture protection and the fully integrated window components.”

One source of inspiration for the facility’s design came from the European, African and Caribbean traditions that have blended over the years to create the New Orleans culture. The design is also meant to recreate the social interaction that is an integral part of the city’s historic courtyards—in the case of 930 Poydras, that space is the ninth floor level where residents share a communal space.  Comprised of 21 stories, the 462,000 square foot mixed-use residential project includes ground floor retail and 250 residential apartments above a 500-car garage base.  The exterior envelope incorporates a highly detailed metal panel and glass patterned façade. This approach allows for a higher percentage of glazing at the upper residential floors with a minimal amount of glass utilized at the garage level in order to maintain a seamless, animated visual.  Also at the garage levels, the metal skin is perforated to provide natural ventilation where required.

“At CENTRIA, we consider ourselves an integral part of the building team, and are pleased that our products contributed to the success of this project by helping the team achieve their design and sustainability goals, as well as achieving this prestigious recognition from the AIA,” said Rick Brow, CENTRIA’s director of marketing.

The Formawall Dimension Series wall system provides both advanced thermal efficiency and moisture control in a single panelized component. Compared to the traditional multi-component wall construction, which typically requires seven separate components, Formawall Dimension Series only requires one installer, simplifying installation and increasing construction efficiency. Formawall Dimension Series is Cradle to CradleCM Certified at the Silver Level, and was the first exterior building product to receive Cradle to Cradle® Certification.

CENTRIA’s Formavue FV400 window system is designed to integrate seamlessly with Formawall Dimension Series panels, eliminating problems in coordinating window and metal panel intersections and contributing to the overall sleek aesthetic of the building.

The AIA's Housing Award Program was established to recognize the best in housing design and promote the importance of good housing as a necessity of life, a sanctuary for the human spirit and a valuable national resource. • CENTRIA Announces Expansion of MetalWrap Series

The insulated composite back-up panel of choice for metal now available for brick, terra cotta

Moon Township, Pa., March 2011—CENTRIA is pleased to announce that MetalWrap Series, its renowned insulated composite back-up panel for use with metal exteriors, has been expanded and is now available for use with brick and terra cotta.  The superior design includes a single thermal, air and moisture barrier back-up panel that can be used with all three wall exteriors, or any combination of the three in mixed-medium buildings, to help architects, owners/developers and contractors build better walls.

“Today’s building teams demand a product that provides a high level of performance as well as ease of installation,” said Bill Hornfeck, MetalWrap Series Product Manager, CENTRIA.MetalWrap Series delivers that and more by positioning the insulation outboard of the studs, but in a single-panel component instead of four separate building materials.”

Traditional multiple component back-up systems typically include multiple layers of batt or board insulation, exterior gypsum board, air barriers or vapor retarders. These systems have limitations, because each of the individual layers can result in breakdowns that can lead to moisture build-up and entrapment within the wall cavity resulting in stud corrosion, poor insulation performance and mold. In addition, they add costs in terms of multiple work crews, more job site deliveries, and scheduling and sequencing coordination.

MetalWrap Series’ superior performance is due to CENTRIA’s signature Advanced Thermal and Moisture Protection (ATMP®) technology that controls moisture without sacrificing thermal efficiency.  It combines a super-insulating foam core with a durable metal rainscreen, air/moisture barrier and unique clips, anchors and supports that are designed with the specific requirements of each building material in mind.

MetalWrap Series also meets thermal and fire code requirements.  Eliminating four building components with the use of one panel means installation is just one step. This also means faster close-in and dry-in, along with minimal construction waste.

In addition, MetalWrap Series is manufactured with a high volume of recycled content, ensuring minimal negative impact on the environment. In line with CENTRIA’s commitment to provide customers with superior sustainability options, MetalWrap Series is Cradle to CradleCM Certified at the Silver Level.

Finally, MetalWrap Series is the only insulated composite back-up panel on the market backed by a nationwide sales force, an extensive Dealer network, and expert design and engineering support.

“Now that building codes require higher R-values and superior energy performance, and the demand for on-time delivery and effective and efficient installation has increased, MetalWrap Series gives architects, building owners/developers and contractors the performance they want with the ease of installation they need regardless of the choice of exterior building product,” said Hornfeck.

  • CENTRIA’s Kolorshift™ Series
    Amplifies Design Possibilities

Unique paints transform based on the viewing angle or direction of sunlight

Moon Township, Pa., June 10, 2010—CENTRIA introduces Kolorshift, a series of iridescent paint colors designed to change the appearance of the metal surface of a building depending on the viewing angle or direction of sunlight.

“CENTRIA prides itself on offering architects and building owners unlimited design possibilities in terms of form, color and texture,” said Rick Brow, Director of Marketing, CENTRIA. “Kolorshift provides yet another unique option with aesthetically pleasing results that helps create a truly distinctive design.”

By using Kolorshift, an architect can design a building where a pedestrian’s first experience it as silver, then purple as they walk by it. While design teams have always employed solar orientation, especially as part of improving a building’s performance (i.e. heat loss/gain), now they can also use it to create a building that transforms from green as the sun rises to copper as the sun sets.

This new line of CENTRIA paints offers a myriad of design possibilities for exterior metal walls. The continuous iridescent color gradient creates depth to the exterior of a building and adds distinguished aesthetic value—all with the exceptional performance expected from CENTRIA’s products.

Kolorshift Series paints are formulated as a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) coating system with 70 percent Kynar 500®/Hylar 5000® resins, which provide lasting durability. The Kolorshift paints are applied by coil coating in order to provide consistent color and available with a standard 20-year warranty.

  • CENTRIA Launches Formawall® Dimension Series®

    BIM Objects

Building Information Modeling (BIM) tool helps architects, owners bring projects to life

Pittsburgh, October 23, 2009 — CENTRIA Architectural Systems announces the launch of BIM objects representing its Formawall Dimension Series wall system. These BIM objects are available to the architectural community through the e-CENTRIA portal located at www.CENTRIA.com and can be found in the details section under the Formawall Dimension Series pages.

“Building Information Modeling is the process of creating and utilizing 3-D digital models for design, detailing and drawings for building projects,” said Greg Lusty, Foam Product Manager, CENTRIA. “In 2007, 28 percent of the market was using BIM in one form or another. Today, almost 50 percent of the market uses BIM. Through the use of BIM, architects can benefit by reduced information coordination, improved productivity and by offering superior visualization of a project. Building owners benefit through lower project costs, a faster construction process and better overall construction.”

CENTRIA’s Formawall Dimension Series BIM objects create the three-dimensional representations of the insulated metal wall panel system. Revit®, the industry’s leading BIM development software program was used to create the objects. The Formawall Dimension Series BIM object allows users the flexibility to easily change module sizes, panel lengths and reveals. The objects can also be customized with CENTRIA standard and custom colors as well as its Duracast® textured finish.

Openings, such as windows, can be easily inserted into the Formawall Dimension Series BIM object, and other building materials such as brick, concrete and curtainwall can also be used in correlation with the product. Additionally, material take offs can be easily created through the use of the BIM object. The model automatically counts the sizes and quantities of the panels used in the project and exports the information to a spreadsheet.

“Formawall Dimension Series is the only wall system that provides both advanced thermal efficiency and moisture control in a single panelized component,” said Lusty. “This performance, along with the system’s ability to provide designers virtually unlimited design possibilities in form, color and texture, have made it the industry’s preferred metal wall system. Now architects and owners can take one step further toward realizing their vision through Formawall Dimension Series BIM Objects.”

  • CENTRIA Announces New
    Versacor® Ultra Coatings

Ultra family of premium coatings offers protection, performance and aesthetics

Moon Township, Pa., April 14, 2009 — CENTRIA (www.CENTRIA.com) announces Versacor Ultra, new high-build coatings that offer enhanced protection against harsh climatic or environmental conditions. Compared to most thin-film architectural coatings available, Versacor Ultra coatings provide a 3-mil-thick Versacor Ultra Barrier Coat Primer over the metal substrate and several topcoat finish combinations to achieve superior resistance against corrosion, humidity and abrasion.

“CENTRIA has more than 100 years of experience and technology in providing high-quality color and coating solutions for metal walls and roofs,” said Rick Brow, Director of Marketing for CENTRIA Architectural Systems. “These Versacor Ultra coatings not only continue that tradition of quality in terms of performance, they also satisfy owners’ and architects’ aesthetic needs with a full palette of color options.”

Coatings within the Versacor Ultra family include Versacor Ultra PF and Versacor Ultra TF and HF. Versacor Ultra PF is ideal for corrosive architectural applications such as coastal environments. This coating consists of a 3-mil-thick Versacor Ultra Barrier Coat Primer and a .8-mil-thick PVDF top coat. On industrial applications, Versacor Ultra TF and HF combine the superior corrosion resistance of the 3-mil-thick Versacor Ultra Barrier Coat Primer with the durability of a Urethane topcoat. The Urethane topcoat ranges from 1.5-mils thick on Versacor Ultra TF to 3-mils thick on Versacor Ultra HF.

Additionally, on most of CENTRIA’s Profile Series panels with a Versacor Ultra coating system, an additional 3-mil-thick Versacor Barrier Coat Primer is applied to the interior of the metal substrate, offering full reverse side coating protection. A Urethane topcoat, wash coat or primer is then applied over the barrier coat, helping to protect the metal against corrosion from the interior. As more exterior walls are designed with back ventilated rainscreen wall systems, this additional protection can extend the life of the wall system.

  • CENTRIA Introduces New Formawall® PE

Pressure Equalized Vertical Seal Plate provides superior defense against water intrusion

Moon Township, Pa., March 17, 2009 — CENTRIA (www.CENTRIA.com) introduces Formawall PE, a pressure equalized vertical seal plate for CENTRIA’s horizontal Formawall® Dimension Series® and Formawall®  Graphix Series™ exterior metal wall panels.
“CENTRIA’s Formawall panels have always offered architects a complete wall system with advanced thermal efficiency and a pressure equalized horizontal joint for moisture control in a single panelized solution,” said Greg Lusty, architectural foam product manager, CENTRIA. “Now in addition to these features, and along with virtually unlimited possibilities in form, color and texture, the Formawall PE vertical seal plate offers even more advanced protection against water infiltration, especially with integrated wall components like windows, louvers and sunshades.”
Key features and benefits of Formawall PE include a versatile extruded aluminum seal plate design that can be used on structural tubes or studs. A gasket and sealant create two lines of defense against water intrusion and the air seal can be inspected for continuity from the interior. Now the vertical and horizontal joinery, all pressure-equalized, minimize the force that normally drives water through an opening and the integrated vented drainage channel in the seal plate vents any moisture penetrating the gasket seal to the exterior without compromising the air seal.

  • Prepainted Metal Increases Profits and Helps the Environment

Factories that switch to prepainted metal are gaining a new competitive edge: energy savings. Outsourcing paint operations, via prepainted metal, can dramatically reduce a manufacturer’s total energy consumption. With prepainted metal, the coil coater assumes the energy costs needed to coat the metal and, thanks to coil coating’s highly efficient processes, uses less total energy, cutting energy demands for the manufacturer…and the planet. This makes prepainting a unique solution that can increase your profits while helping our environment.

In addition to energy savings, converting to the coil coating process further helps reduce costs for manufacturers by eliminating the time and hassles associated with EPA filing requirements and permits associated with vapor degreasers, paint booths, and washers. This helps manufacturers and our environment in the following ways:

    • Reduces waste handling costs
    • Eases burden of record keeping, reports and permits
    • Curbs water usage
    • Lowers maintenance costs

For years, coil coaters have worked to reduce waste and emissions with the latest technology and ongoing field research. Because of these efforts, coil coating is the most efficient process known for applying finishes to metals. Coil coating manufacturing facilities utilize state-of-the-art processes that employ EPA-approved water and pollution equipment to apply coatings to metal at high speeds with minimal environmental impact.

The National Coil Coating Association (NCCA) is committed to making manufacturers more efficient, profitable, and environmentally friendly. The NCCA’s Environmental Stewardship Committee continues to research and implement new ideas to build on the coated coil industry’s environmental benefits.

With the help of the NCCA and coil coating technology, now going green can help manufacturers stay in the black.

To learn more about coil coating’s green benefits, visit www.coilcoatinginstitute.org and view the NCCA’s Online Tutorial “Energy and Environmental Benefits of Prepaint.”

  • CENTRIA International Announces New Versacor Ultra Coatings

Versacor Ultra family of premium coatings offer protection, performance and aesthetics

PITTSBURGH, United States, April 23, 2009— CENTRIA (www.CENTRIA.com) announces Versacor Ultra, new high-build coatings that offer enhanced protection against harsh climatic or environmental conditions. Compared to most thin-film architectural coatings available, Versacor Ultra coatings provide a 75 micron (3-mil) Versacor Ultra Barrier Coat Primer over the metal substrate and several topcoat finish combinations to achieve superior resistance against corrosion, humidity and abrasion.

“CENTRIA has more than 100 years of experience and technology in providing high-quality color and coating solutions for metal walls and roofs,” said Julie Pawuk, Marketing Communications Manager. “The original Versacor coatings provided industry leading corrosion protection for cladding material through the use of multi-layer coating technology. The new Versacor Ultra finishes follow the same philosophy to provide enhanced performance over the original systems through the use of the latest paint and barrier coat technologies, yet they also satisfy owners’ and architects’ aesthetic needs with a full palette of color options.”

Coatings within the Versacor Ultra family include Versacor Ultra PF and Versacor Ultra TF and HF. Versacor Ultra PF is ideal for corrosive architectural applications such as coastal environments. This coating consists of a 75-micron- (3 mil) thick Versacor Ultra Barrier  Coat Primer and a 20 micron (0.8 mil) nominal PVDF top coat. On severe industrial applications, Versacor Ultra TF and HF both combine the superior corrosion resistance of the 75-micron- (3 mil) thick Versacor Ultra Barrier Coat Primer with the durability of a Urethane topcoat. The Urethane topcoat ranges from 38 microns (1.5 mils) on Versacor Ultra TF to 75 microns (3 mils) on Versacor Ultra HF.

Additionally, on most of CENTRIA’s Profile Series panels with a Versacor Ultra coating system, an additional 75 micron (3 mil) Versacor Barrier  Coat Primer is applied to the interior of the metal substrate, offering full reverse side coating protection. An internal paint finish of either standard acrylic wash coat, Urethane or primer is then applied over the barrier coat, helping to protect the metal against corrosion from the interior and at the underside of profile lap conditions. As more exterior walls are designed with back ventilated rainscreen wall systems, this additional protection will extend the life of the wall system.
