CENTRIA Product, Eco Sound Barrier receives ASCE Charles Pankow Award for Innovation
MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa., January 22, 2010 — CENTRIA is pleased to announce that Eco Sound Barrier, a sound barrier system with the industry's most innovative combination of affordability, sustainability and architectural flexibility, has received the American Society of Civil Engineer’s Charles Pankow Award for Innovation.
The Charles Pankow Award was established in 1996 and named for industry visionary Charles J. Pankow. The award celebrates collaboration in innovative design, materials or construction-related research and development put into practice in a sustainable manner.
“We are delighted to have won this prestigious award,” said Todd Padezanin, product manager of Eco Sound Barrier for CENTRIA. “We feel like Eco Sound Barrier is truly a revolution in sound barrier technology, and it’s great to receive recognition for our hard work from the country’s preeminent civil engineering society.”
Eco Sound Barrier is the industry’s first Cradle-to-CradleCM-certified road product and is a cost-effective, green alternative to traditional sound barriers. This innovative sound barrier is made from 23 percent recycled material and is 100 percent recyclable at the end of its useful life. And, at only 4.25 pounds per square foot, Eco Sound Barrier requires far fewer trucks to transport it to the jobsite, which dramatically cuts down on emissions and lowers a project’s carbon footprint. Additionally, total installed costs for Eco Sound Barrier are less than those of traditional precast barriers.
“This innovative product was conceived and developed with the collaboration of many partners, including Bayer Material Science LLC, Joseph B. Fay Construction Company, Tom Brown, Inc. and Aleris Aluminum,” explains Bob Allman, senior structural engineer of Eco Sound Barrier for CENTRIA. “We’re honored to have Eco Sound Barrier receive this award, and we’re pleased to acknowledge our collaborators and their dedication in the product design and development.””
Eco Sound Barrier will receive the award during the ASCE OPAL (Outstanding Projects and Leaders) Awards Gala held on March 25, 2010, in Washington, D.C. The OPAL Awards are the preeminent awards program for civil engineers and the ASCE’s principal mechanism for bringing worldwide attention to the contributions and accomplishments of the civil engineering community. The OPAL Gala traditionally draws hundreds of civil engineers, practitioners, educators, military engineers and researchers. Founded in 1852, the American Society of Civil Engineers represents more than 144,000 civil engineers worldwide and is America’s oldest national engineering society.

invelope Selected BuildingGreen Top-10 Product for 2009
invelope continues to prove as a superior back-up wall system
Moon Township, Pa., November 12, 2009 – invelope has been selected as one of BuildingGreen’s Top-10 products of the year by the editors of Environmental Building News and GreenSpec®. This eighth annual award recognizes the most innovative and exciting green building products added to the GreenSpec® Directory during the past year or covered in Environmental Building News.
“Our selections of the Top-10 Green Building Products represent a wide range of product types in many different application areas,” noted GreenSpec BuildingGreen founder and executive editor Alex Wilson. This year’s list is particularly diverse, ranging from a recycled-content concrete block, to a flywheel energy storage system for data centers, a mobile solar generator for job-site power, and an advanced modular classroom for schools. “Many of the Top-10 products this year have multiple environmental attributes,” said Wilson.
BuildingGreen’s Top-10 product selections, as in previous years, are drawn primarily from new additions to the company’s GreenSpec Product Directory. About 200 products have been added to the GreenSpec database during the past year. “New products are being introduced all the time, making it a challenge for our staff to keep up,” said Wilson. The GreenSpec database includes more than 2,100 product listings, representing several times as many actual products.
A big driver in the development of green products continues to be the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED® Rating System (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), which awards points for the use of certain product types or for the energy or water savings that certain green products can achieve. “Designers of LEED buildings are looking for green products, and manufacturers are responding,” said Wilson. In the online version of GreenSpec, users can find products organized by LEED credits.
invelope panels feature a foam-filled super-insulating core combined with a durable metal rainscreen and integrated masonry anchors. Designed primarily for commercial and institutional applications, the invelope system is based on superior wall technology proven for more than 30 years of successful performance on thousands of buildings around the world.
The integrated, all-in-one panel design totally eliminates the need for conventional batt or board insulation, exterior gypsum board, air and vapor barriers, and building wraps, while providing better thermal efficiency and moisture control than conventional multi-component barrier walls.
Beyond its extraordinary promise as a barrier wall solution for commercial buildings, invelope is also widely acknowledged for its environmental attributes. Thanks to its superior insulation, mold elimination, moisture protection, and durability, invelope can help buildings earn LEED points in categories such as energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality.
Because of its high volume of recycled content and the environmental friendliness of its component materials, invelope also has the proud distinction of being the first-ever barrier-wall material to earn the coveted Cradle to CradleSM certification. That makes buildings using invelope eligible for potential LEED credits in Innovation in Design.
GreenSpec is the leading national directory of green building products. Products are selected based on criteria developed over the past 17 years. Manufacturers do not pay to be listed in GreenSpec, and neither GreenSpec nor Environmental Building News carry advertising; both are supported by users of the information. “Our policy of not accepting money from product manufacturers allows us to be objective in our review of products,” said Wilson. The GreenSpec product database is also available online as part of BuildingGreen.com.

Eco Sound Barrier by CENTRIA approved for use in Ohio
MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — CENTRIA is pleased to announce that the Ohio Department of Transportation has approved Eco Sound Barrier, the industry’s first inexpensive composite sound barrier, for use on state highway projects. A cost-effective, green alternative to traditional precast concrete barriers, Eco Sound Barrier offers a new option for noise control on Ohio highways.
Material costs for Eco Sound Barrier are about one-third those of traditional precast barriers. Additionally, fewer workers can install the barriers in significantly less time than precast barriers, lowering labor costs.
“Eco Sound Barrier by CENTRIA is a revolution in highway sound barrier technology,” said Rick Mowrey, director of marketing and business development for CENTRIA. “Our new sound barrier not only saves money for state DOTs, but it’s also a truly green alternative to precast concrete.”
The only highway product to be Cradle-to-CradleCM certified, Eco Sound Barrier is made from 23 percent recycled material and is 100 percent recyclable at the end of its useful life. And, at only 4.25 pounds per square foot, Eco Sound Barrier requires far fewer trucks to transport it to the jobsite. This dramatically cuts down on emissions, lowers a project’s carbon footprint and reduces transportation and labor costs on Ohio highway jobsites.
CENTRIA’S Eco Sound Barrier was approved for use in Pennsylvania in 2008, and Ohio is the second state to approve the product. Applications are pending in states across the U.S.
Eco Sound Barrier panels come in standard lengths of 12, 14 and 16 feet but can also be customized to fit particular project requirements. The panels come in five finishes: ivy, brick, cobblestone, stucco and painted, with about 20 color options to choose from.

invelope™ Participates in Window Flashing Rodeo
All-in-One Barrier Wall Showcases Assembly and Performance Capabilities
Moon Township, Pa., May 29, 2009 – invelope has taken part in the BEC-Atlanta (Building Enclosure Council) Window Flashing Rodeo on April 22 and April 29, 2009.
At the rodeo, invelope panels, which replaced plywood as the sheathing, were installed with a commercial storefront window integrated into it. By constructing the invelope wall with the window, it was demonstrated how the invelope system is assembled, how a window can be integrated into the system, and the integrity of the barrier wall. After the installation and during the test phase of the process, the invelope wall was exposed to a severe water test, showing that invelope serves as a proven back-up to brick or rainscreen systems.
The BEC-Atlanta held this event to explore the design, installation and performance of various window flashing assemblies. Teams of participants were asked to design and install a window and flashing assembly onto a pre-assembled 8 x 8 panel. One week later the installation, the panels were tested for water penetration in accordance with ASTM E 1105.
The intent of the rodeo is to learn the benefits of each wall system/construction and to create a collaborative effort to successfully install a window that conforms to the window manufacturer’s installation instructions, ASTM E 2112, as well as applicable building codes and standards.
“We are pleased that invelope was able to participate in this event. It allowed us to show how easily windows can be integrated into invelope panels and their proven ability as a back-up wall system,” said Bill Hornfeck, invelope Product Manager.

invelope™ Passes ISMA Fire Resistance Test
Moon Township, Pa., February 4, 2009 – invelope, an all-in-one backup wall system for masonry and brick exteriors, has passed the National Fire Protection Agency’s (NFPA 285) ISMA fire resistance test (Intermediate Scale Multistory Test Apparatus).
Because invelope has met all criteria of this test, the panel is compliant to Chapter 26 of the International Building Code. Therefore, invelope may be used in construction where non-combustible materials are required, including all buildings - Type I, II, A, or B, and those of any height or area.
The NFPA 285 test determines the flammability of exterior wall systems that contain combustible components and how flames will spread in the following conditions: over the face of the system, one story to the next, room side from one story to next, and lateral flame spread from room to room. This test recreates an actual fire situation in a two-story structure.
invelope’s one-piece construction, featuring rigid steel skins that enclose a foam core, makes it suitable for rigorous product performance testing and significantly aids in the reduction of flame spread. Other multi-component systems are seldom tested in this manner and typically are not able to offer the same proven performance results. Achieving necessary flame spread performance is particularly difficult for multi-component systems that employ exposed foam plastic insulation
About invelope invelope was formed by CENTRIA Services Group in 2007. invelope panels feature a foam-filled super-insulating core combined with a durable metal rainscreen and integrated masonry anchors.
